The introduction to the index reads "Page numbers in italics indicate illustration captions." This meant that many vessels were mentioned in illustration captions, but weren't actually represented in the illustrations. I went through the index and removed italics when the image didn't actually provide an image of the ship. So now, a page number in italics indicates that the vessel in question is shown in the image.
From the introduction to the index, "Unless otherwise mentioned, all ships and units are United States forces."
means the resource includes an illustration of the ship
means the resource includes a main entry about the ship
means the resource includes a passenger or crew list for the ship
means the resource was added in the past 45 days
means the resource requires an additional subscription to access
means the resource is a book
means the resource is a journal (magazine)
means the resource is a native online resource (digitized books or journals
are still noted as 'book' or 'journal', even when they're accessed or accessible online)
