This resource is a PDF output of an Excel spreadsheet, documenting research done by the Alaska office of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, in 2011, compiling all known shipwrecks in Alaskan waters, and many others, as well. The PDF of the Excel contains all of the information in the spreadsheet, but it can be difficult to use. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • The ShipIndex.org database will tell you that a vessel is mentioned in the BOEM spreadsheet. Open the PDF at the "Alaskan Shipwreck table: 1729-2000" link, then use the your viewer's 'find' tool to locate the ship name you're researching.
  • Many dates appear as "1/1" and then the year (for example, "1/1/1884"), and I took those to mean that the loss occurred in the stated year but the exact date is not known. I converted these dates to note just the year.
  • Remember that many entries continue onto the next page of the spreadsheet. Some include fantastic narratives.
  • Not all dates are for the 'loss' of a ship; they also include mentions of damage or of incidents in which the vessel was repaired

There is a guide to all of the Sources that are cited in the spreadsheet here: https://www.boem.gov/sites/default/files/uploadedFiles/BOEM/About_BOEM/BOEM_Regions/Alaska_Region/Ships/Shipwreck_Sources.pdf; if you can't access that PDF directly, you should be able to find a link to it here: https://www.boem.gov/about-boem/alaska-shipwrecks-1729-2000
